Paediatric Neurology in Oxford

Our Consultant Paediatrician, Nicholas Richens, provides expert assessment and management of children’s neurological symptoms at Mayfield Clinic Oxford. We help with headaches, migraines, seizures, tics, developmental concerns and unexplained neurological changes, offering calm, child-centred care and clear guidance for families.

During your visit we take a detailed history, examine vision, coordination, strength and reflexes, and review growth and development. Where indicated, we arrange tests such as bloods, EEG, or MRI, and create a tailored plan covering acute relief, prevention, lifestyle and school strategies. We can initiate and monitor medicines when needed, provide seizure and safety plans, and support behavioural and non-pharmacological approaches for tics and migraines.

We coordinate with your GP and NHS services, and can fast-track referrals if specialist imaging or tertiary input is required. Same-week appointments are often available. Learn more about our broader children’s service on our Paediatrics page.

If your child has a severe headache with fever and neck stiffness, a first seizure lasting over 5 minutes, new weakness, confusion, or a rapidly worsening headache after injury, seek urgent emergency care.

What we assess and treat

We welcome children and young people from birth to 18 for:

• Headaches and migraines (including trigger identification and preventive strategies)
• Seizures, possible epilepsy, non-epileptic events and fainting
• Tics and Tourette syndrome, including behavioural approaches
• Developmental concerns affecting movement, coordination and learning
• Weakness, sensory change, gait issues, dizziness and visual symptoms
