Wimbledon Private GP Health MOT Explained

Private GP

One of the most common questions I hear in Wimbledon is, "What actually happens during a private GP health MOT?" At Mayfield Clinic Wimbledon, our Annual Medical is designed as a personalised review of your health, rather than a single rushed visit. NHS Health Check research has shown it helps reduce cardiovascular disease and supports earlier detection of other conditions through preventive review, according to an NIHR evidence review from 2024. That reinforces the wider value of preventive health checks, while a private Annual Medical gives us scope to look more broadly at your health as an individual.

What is really involved in a private GP health MOT?

At Mayfield Clinic Wimbledon, the Annual Medical, sometimes called a health MOT, is built around three separate appointments. The first is a 30 minute consultation focused entirely on your history. I go through your past medical history, current symptoms, medications, family history, lifestyle, sleep and stress, along with anything specific you are concerned about. Blood and urine samples are also taken during this visit.

Once your results are back, the second appointment is where I carry out a physical examination, explain your results in full, and discuss your individual health risks with you. The final part is a separate session with a dedicated health and lifestyle coach, covering exercise, healthy ageing and sustainable behaviour change. The whole idea is to build a review around you, not work through a fixed checklist in one sitting.

What tests and investigations are included?

The baseline panel is comprehensive. It includes a full blood count, kidney and liver function, cholesterol and lipid profile, HbA1c for diabetes risk, thyroid function, iron and ferritin levels, vitamin D for women, and a prostate profile for men. Urinalysis is done on site, and a bowel cancer screening kit is sent to you separately.

At your results appointment, I also check blood pressure, pulse, height, weight and BMI. If anything in your history suggests that further investigation would be useful, such as an ECG or a specific specialist test, I will discuss this with you. Those are outside the standard package and are charged separately.

How is this different from an NHS Health Check?

The NHS Health Check is a valuable service, but it is only offered once every five years to adults aged 40 to 74. It focuses mainly on cardiovascular risk, including heart disease, stroke, diabetes and kidney disease. A private Annual Medical in Wimbledon is available whenever you want it, is not restricted by age, and covers considerably more ground. That includes thyroid function, iron levels, vitamin D and prostate health, alongside a genuinely personalised consultation and dedicated lifestyle coaching.

I think it is best understood as a broader, more individual health review, rather than a replacement for NHS screening.

What happens afterwards?

You will not receive a formal written report. You will, however, receive copies of all your investigation results directly, and I will talk you through what each result means for you specifically during your results appointment. If anything needs following up, whether that is a referral, further testing or starting treatment, we discuss and arrange it as part of the same process.

From your first appointment to your final lifestyle session, most patients complete the full process within a few weeks.

This is general information and not a substitute for individual medical advice. Additional investigations beyond the standard panel, such as ECG, spirometry, imaging or specialist blood tests, are only arranged where clinically indicated and incur additional charges.

I have 17 years of postgraduate clinical experience, including 9 years as a fully qualified GP, and I currently practise in Wimbledon. If you would like to read more about our annual medicals, private GP service, or the Wimbledon clinic, you can find more information on our website.
