Are your skin irritations something more serious?

Skin problems are common, and most of the time, they're harmless. But what if your red, sore, or oozing patch just won't go away, or seems to be spreading? In the UK, a particularly troublesome cause could be MRSA – a type of bacteria that's resistant to many common antibiotics and can cause serious infections.

What is MRSA and why should I care?

MRSA stands for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. It's a "superbug" found in about 1 in 30 healthy people, usually living harmlessly on the skin or in the nose and groin. Problems arise when the bacteria enter the body through a cut or sore, or pass to someone more vulnerable, such as an elderly relative or someone in hospital.

Common symptoms to look for:

If you or a loved one notice any of these symptoms, especially following surgery or a hospital visit, MRSA could be to blame. Read more on the NHS A-Z: MRSA.

How does the MRSA PCR swab test work?

The At-Home MRSA PCR Nose & Groin Swab Test Kit lets you check for MRSA in the comfort of your own home. Using two easy-to-use swabs (for your nose and groin), this test rapidly detects MRSA DNA with high accuracy.

Good to know: You’ll get results within 1 day after your sample arrives at our accredited UK lab.

What should I do if I’m worried?

MRSA can be managed, and early detection helps protect you and your family. At Mayfield Clinic, you can buy a home test kit online or book an in-person blood test at our Oxfordshire clinics.

Frequently asked questions

What is MRSA and why should I be tested?

MRSA is a type of bacteria (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) that is resistant to several antibiotics. It can cause skin infections, and in more serious cases, bloodstream infections or pneumonia. Detecting MRSA colonisation early helps prevent its spread and manage any potential infections quickly.

How does the At-Home MRSA PCR Nose & Groin Swab Test work?

The test involves two purple-cap Amies medium swabs, one for the nose and one for the groin. Swab instructions are included, and results are delivered within 1 day after your kit is returned to our lab.

Why do I need to swab both my nose and groin?

MRSA is not always persistently present in one spot. Both the nose and groin are common areas of colonisation, so swabbing both sites improves the reliability of your result.
