We’ve all had occasional stomach upsets: maybe a takeaway didn't agree with you, or a bout of food poisoning ruined your weekend. But what if your symptoms linger, or seem unusually severe? Persistent gut problems can be more than an inconvenience—they may signal an enteric infection that needs attention.
An enteric (or intestinal) infection is an illness caused by bacteria, viruses, or parasites entering your digestive tract. In the UK, gastroenteritis is common, but sometimes the cause is less obvious. Symptoms can include:
If your symptoms last longer than a few days, are unusually intense, or you develop a high fever or blood in your stool, you may need further testing. People with weakened immune systems, the elderly, and young children are especially vulnerable.
If you have recently travelled abroad, or if someone in your close circle is unwell too, an enteric infection is even more likely.
The at-home enteric infection PCR test is a simple, convenient stool sample collection kit. You collect your sample at home, send it to our lab, and receive rapid results (usually within 2 days). The advanced PCR technique checks for a wide range of causes—from E. coli to viral pathogens.
If you’re tired of guessing, consider the Mayfield at-home enteric infection PCR test kit. Prefer face-to-face care? Book an in-person test at your nearest Mayfield Clinic location.
Common symptoms include diarrhoea, stomach cramps, nausea, vomiting, and occasionally fever. Some people may notice blood or mucus in their stool, or experience more severe symptoms. If your symptoms persist for more than a few days, or you're concerned about dehydration, consult your GP.
At-home stool sample PCR tests are designed to be clean and easy. You'll receive a collection kit and clear instructions. After collecting your sample, seal it in the provided packaging and return it using the prepaid envelope. Results are typically available within 2 days of receipt.
Some mild digestive infections will resolve on their own with good hydration and rest. You can help by maintaining hand hygiene, avoiding contaminated food or water, and eating bland foods whilst unwell. However, a PCR test can provide clarity, especially if symptoms persist or worsen.
