Headaches are pain felt in any area of the head, sometimes in multiple areas at once. Headaches will usually go away on their own within a couple of hours and drinking plenty of water, resting, relaxing and taking painkillers can help to ease the pain. Headaches can occur for many reasons including stress, bad eyesight, bad posture, dehydration, drinking alcohol and having a cold or the flu. If you are frequently getting headaches, painkillers aren’t helping or you are experiencing other symptoms such as nausea, you should see a GP who will be able to help you.
A migraine is a severe headache that is often accompanied by nausea, vomiting and sensitivity to light and sound. The headache is usually felt as a throbbing pain on one side of the head. Migraines are common, but some people experience them much more frequently and severely than others. The cause of migraines is unknown, with genes being thought to play a role as well as changes in chemicals, nerves, and blood vessels in the brain. Migraines can be triggered by stress, tiredness, the menstrual cycle and certain foods and drinks so understanding your specific triggers can help you to manage your symptoms.
Headaches and migraines can be debilitating and interrupt daily activities, with intense pain, nausea, feeling generally unwell and some people needing to lie down in a dark room until they pass. If you have frequent or severe headaches or migraines, you should see a GP who will be able to help you. They will work with you to investigate the causes of your headaches and plan the most appropriate treatment for you. In some cases, headaches can be a symptom of another illness so the GP may carry out some test to rule this out.
