Our home HPV test kit detects strains of HPV that are known to cause cervical cancer
Mayfield Clinic’s home HPV test detects strains of HPV which are identified as high risk in the development of cervical cancer. Catching the infection early can prevent the virus spreading or developing into cancer, so regular testing is very important.
Swab sample
Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is easily transmitted via sexual contact, is mostly symptomless and is the cause of almost all cervical cancers. HPV is very common, with an estimated 1 in 2 women contracting the virus in their lifetime. Most of the time, having HPV doesn’t cause any problems but in some people, it can cause abnormal changes to cells that can sometimes turn into cancer.
The test kit contains a simple cervical swab which you can do at home, instructions on how to carry out the test and a pre-paid returns envelope for you to send your sample to the laboratory for testing. You will receive your results via text message within five working days of posting your sample.
There are many reasons to get tested for HPV, including for your own peace of mind. Most women will become infected with at least one strain of HPV in their lifetimes, which in most cases will clear without causing any harm but in some cases, it can cause abnormal cells which develop into cancer. You may want to get checked if:
There are detailed instructions on how to take your sample inside the test kit. It is easy to use and unlike a cervical smear test performed by a medical professional, it doesn’t include a speculum.
There are over 100 strains of HPV, with certain strains being considered high risk in the development of cervical cancer. If one of these high risk strains is detected in your sample, your results will read as being positive, meaning you are currently infected with a high risk strain of HPV and it is recommended that you book a follow-up appointment with one of our GPs to discuss further tests or treatment. This can be done via our website.
It is important to note that HPV home testing is not a replacement for regular cervical smear tests which are offered on the NHS for women aged 25-64. Regardless of the results of your HPV home test, you should still attend these regular appointments.
HPV is transmitted via skin to skin contact around the genital areas or sharing items which have in contact with the genitals. If you have had unprotected sexual activity or have been exposed to someone who has HPV, you should get tested. There are no symptoms of HPV so testing is the only way to know if you have it.
Other than cervical cancer, HPV can cause genital warts in some people. The home HPV test kit does not test for genital warts.
The time taken to receive your results vary but we aim to get the results back to you within 5 working days of the lab receiving your sample.
