Monkeypox testing now available

Posted: 26/07/2022

Monkeypox is a rare disease which is caused by infection with monkeypox virus (MPXV). Although it is rare, it can infect anyone who comes into direct contact with lesions or scabs, body fluids, respiratory droplets or contaminated linens or towels.

The advice from the UK government is that all suspected and confirmed cases of monkeypox require respiratory isolation to control and prevent spread of the infection. The scabs of monkeypox are also infectious so care needs to be taken when handling bedding and clothes of someone infected.

The time between contact with monkeypox and developing symptoms is between 5-21 days and an individual is contagious until all the scabs have fallen off and the skin underneath is intact.

Mayfield Clinic is now offering a monkeypox testing service from our Oxford clinic. The 15-minute appointment will be with one of our experienced GPs who will collect your sample in a designated outside area to reduce the risk of infection. Your sample will be sent to the lab for testing and the results will be back within 3 working days.

Should you wish to speak to a GP about your results or symptoms, we offer 30 minute online GP consultation which you can attend from the comfort of your own home.
