COVID-19 PCR swab testing now available at Mayfield Clinic. This test is used for those with symptoms to confirm a COVID-19 infection. It can be used to allow people to stay in essential work if they test negative, or to self-isolate if they test positive.
The PCR test is used to directly detect the presence of the COVID antigen, rather than the presence of antibodies that are produced as a result of the body’s immune response (for the Antibody test, please see this post). By detecting viral RNA, which is present in the body before antibodies form or symptoms of the disease are present, this test can tell whether someone has the disease very early on. This test is conducted by a UKAS accredited laboratory in London. The laboratory will communicate positive results directly to the NHS.
To order please book a standard Members (requires Mayfield Clinic Membership, purchasable here) or Non-members video consultation – following your consultation, you will be able to collect the test kit from Mayfield. Results can be provided within 2-3 days of testing. The test costs £77.50, billed during the consultation and in addition to the standard consult fees. Further details available here.
You may also buy the home test kit as a product without consultation or interpretation of results. The package will be delivered to you, and you will submit results to the lab directly. Results will be sent to you by the laboratory within 7 days. This can be bought for £175 by visiting this page.
The test is conducted via a home testing kit. The swab is taken from the back of the nose or the throat and is then sent to the laboratory. The result is available within 3-4 days when ordered via a consultation, or 7 days when the home testing kit is purchased without a consultation.
